"Roaring Kitty" and the GameStop Phenomenon: How He Made Millions Through Meme Stocks

By Lucas Donovan Sep 27, 2024

Exploiting undervalued stocks and riding on the GameStop craze, Keith Gill, famously known as "Roaring Kitty," amassed a fortune through savvy investing and strategic online influence.

Known online as "Roaring Kitty," former financial analyst Keith Gill has significantly impacted the trading world with his influence in the GameStop stock surge at the end of 2020. Gill's belief that GameStop shares were heavily undervalued encouraged him to purchase $53,000 worth of the company's stock in 2019-an investment that skyrocketed to a whopping $48 million in value during the peak of the surge in January 2021.

Much of Gill's financial standing appears to be connected to his GameStop investment, implying that his net worth regularly fluctuates. After a brief hiatus from the public in June 2021, Gill re-emerged in May 2024 with enigmatic memes shared on his X account. He next showcased snapshots of his GameStop portfolio on his Reddit account, dubbed 'DeepF---ingValue', or 'DFV', in June. The online buzz surrounding Roaring Kitty's return to social media and the renewed interest in meme stocks contributed to a surge in GME stock prices.

By June 13, 2024, Gill's Reddit portfolio snapshot revealed holdings of over 9 million GameStop shares, valued at an impressive $262 million, plus $6.3 million in cash. His total net worth at this time was estimated to be around $268 million.

During a YouTube livestream on June 7, 2024-his first in three years-Gill publicly displayed his E*Trade portfolio, confirming that his GameStop positions were his exclusive investments.

An SEC filing in July 2024 revealed that Gill also holds a 6.6% stake in pet product retailer Chewy (CHWY), owning 9 million shares. Chewy's founder is billionaire Ryan Cohen, who holds the position of CEO at GameStop. Gill publicly lauded Cohen during his June livestream.

In 2023, Sony Pictures capitalized on Gill's influence in the GameStop frenzy and released a film titled "Dumb Money," which portrays Gill's life and his unique journey through the 2020-2021 GameStop madness.
