Rethinking College Education: Leading Tech Executives Weigh In

By Caleb Mitchell Sep 16, 2025

Tech stalwarts voice their views on the necessity of college education for prospective entrants in the tech industry.

Top executives at major tech companies are advising young individuals to reassess their perception of education, considering whether college is absolutely necessary. The tech industry, which has seen numerous successful college dropouts, is continuously being transformed, particularly by the advent of artificial intelligence. As a result, freshly graduated individuals are finding it harder to secure the high-paying jobs that were once bountiful.

Alex Karp, the CEO of Palantir (PLTR), voiced during the company's Q2 earnings call that he is indifferent about his employees' alma maters. He stressed that one's career focus should be given priority, and asserted that being part of Palantir is a superior credential in the tech world.

Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, has repeatedly stated that a college degree isn't a prerequisite for employment at Apple. Cook pointed out in 2019 and reiterated in 2023, that the skills being imparted in colleges often don't align with the skills Apple presumes to be crucial for future roles.

Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, has confessed that he would prefer to major in the physical sciences, such as physics and chemistry, if he were to go back to his college years, over the bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering that he actually pursued prior to founding Nvidia.

A number of tech giants such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bill Gates never completed their college education. Jobs even believed that college douses creativity. In contrast, Gates expressed remorse for dropping out of Harvard. He confessed earlier this year that he champions broad knowledge and would only suggest dropping out of college in extraordinary circumstances.
